The Secret to Loyal Clients: Incredible Retention
Nothing frustrates a lash client more than waking up to a pillow full of shed extensions just a few days after their appointment. Conversely, nothing builds client loyalty faster than lash extensions that last 4-6 weeks. Excellent lash retention is the hallmark of a master lash artist. If your clients are experiencing premature shedding, follow these 5 expert tips to drastically improve your retention rates.
1. Perfect Your Prep (Clean Lashes are Mandatory)
Cyanoacrylate (the main ingredient in lash adhesive) requires a perfectly clean surface to bond. Any natural oils, makeup residue, or dust on the natural lash will create a barrier, leading to extensions popping off prematurely.
- The Fix: Always start with a thorough lash bath using a professional, oil-free lash cleanser. Follow up with a primer if your client has naturally oily skin. Never skip the prep!
2. Control Your Environment (Temperature and Humidity)
Lash adhesive is incredibly sensitive to the environment. Cyanoacrylate cures (hardens) by pulling moisture from the air. If the humidity is too high, the glue cures too fast (shock polymerization), resulting in a weak, brittle bond. If the humidity is too low, the glue cures too slowly, causing the lashes to stick together (stickies).
- The Fix: Invest in a digital hygrometer. Know the ideal humidity and temperature range for your specific adhesive (usually around 45-55% humidity and 20-22°C). Use a humidifier or dehumidifier to stabilize your lash room.
3. Use the Correct Amount of Adhesive
More glue does not equal better retention. In fact, using too much glue makes the extensions heavy, clumps natural lashes together, and prevents the adhesive from curing properly throughout.
- The Fix: Dip only the bottom 2-3mm of the extension into the adhesive. You should see a tiny, seamless coating, not a large bead of glue.
4. Master the Wrap Technique
When applying volume or promade fans, the base of the fan must physically “wrap” around the natural lash. This maximizes the surface area of the bond, creating an unbreakable seal.
- The Fix: Ensure the base of your fan is completely flat and flush against the natural lash. Avoid “T-bar” placements where the base of the fan doesn’t fully connect. High-quality Promade fans with tiny bases are significantly easier to wrap than bulky premades.
5. Educate Your Clients on Aftercare
You can execute a flawless application, but if the client goes home and rubs mascara all over them, they won’t last.
- The Fix: Provide a strict aftercare routine. Instruct them to wash their lashes daily with a lash cleanser, avoid oil-based skincare products around the eyes, and never pick or pull at their extensions. A well-educated client is your best partner in achieving amazing retention!
